Artist Statement

My work represents the human experience and our awareness of the life force through abstraction. I use abstraction as a tool for communicating emotions and spiritual concepts because emotions and spirituality are intangible. Energetic brushwork and vibrant colors show the mundane emerging into spirit.

I use acrylic paint and dry pastels because they are quick to dry and easy to layer. This quickness allows me to make instinctual corrections with satisfying immediacy as discoveries and changes arise. I use intuitive color choices and move around the painting in order to capture the vitality I feel. This physical involvement helps me remain aware of my own existence as I create imagery meant to reflect the energy of life. The artworks are tangible manifestations, just as the human body is the physical actualization of the soul’s compulsion.

The soul is the highest, most vital essence that expresses life in human beings. It is responsible for discovery, inspiration, and insight. I suspect the soul is less aware and far less dependent on the body, but the body requires the spirit for consciousness, expression, and experience. We are each, at various times in life, capable of different levels of awareness of our spirit and its consistent power and influence.
