What Makes an Artist?

Dreaming up Artist Rewilding has been an adventure— figuring out what we wanted to say, how we wanted to say it, and where we wanted to go with it took some editing and self-reflection.

We knew we wanted to show not only that creativity belonged to everyone and was an innate part of being human, but also what we, as artists, were doing to reconnect with that natural part of ourselves.

Children at a young age always claim the illustrious title of “artist” but then by the time they reach high school they lose that connection within. If we do manage to march into the world with our artist badge on, we struggle incorporating it into our identity, often doubting who we are and our abilities or our value.

Why do have such difficulty calling ourselves artists? And what qualifies anyone as an artist?

I came across this great “Conversation Starter” post by Art 21 called “What qualifies being an artist?”

Watch it. Be inspired. Ask yourself, did you ever call yourself an artist? Reconnect with that part of yourself and know that YOU expressing what is inside of you or trying to make the world a little more interesting is ALL that is required.

Be you. Create.

Jasmine Quintana

Jasmine I. Quintana received her BA in 2016 from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, with a major in art history and a minor in studio art-concentrating in painting. Focusing on creating visual narratives, Jasmine lives in the realm of magical realism-bending the lines and boundaries between emotion, reality, and dreams. A strong fascination with organic shapes found in nature, Jasmine’s work is a melody of interaction between the human figure, the natural world, and the complex emotion found in between. In this space is where she says, the best stories are told.
