Stephen Sprouse at the Indianapolis Museum of Art

All photos were taken at IMA at Newfields in 2023 by Jasmine Quintana and Abril Warner.

About a year ago, the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields hosted Stephen Sprouse: Rock | Art | Fashion an exhibition of over sixty ensembles by the Indiana native (born in Ohio, but raised in IN). We were immediately stunned and charmed by the designs, and then altogether taken by the collaborations with artists like Basquiat and Haring. Some of the clothing had us imagining ourselves as part of the 1970’s rock scene with Debbie Harry (Blondie) and Warhol.

Stephen Sprouse’s work should be experienced in person in all of its Dayglo glory. Those fortunate enough to wear his clothing must have an extra kick in their stride on those days. The designs harken back fifty years, but there is a real sense of the now and of the future. Sprouse’s work would be as fitting in an expressively colorful futuristic world.

We hope, in the spirit of sharing this exhilarating show with you, that we captured some of the vibrant energy of Sprouse’s designs. Newfields and Sprouse’s assistant created a song list for us to consider. Listen.

We left an offering.
